スペックを削ぎ、低価格であることを特長とする「ネットブック」の人気が高まっている。各社から様々な製品が相次いで登場し、市場を賑わせているが、はたして使い勝手はどうなのか？ 今回はBTOが可能なデルの製品を紹介する。
Inspiron Mini 9ネットブックとして標準的な構成
デルの「Inspiron Mini 9」は、ネットブックと呼ばれる小型のノートPCだ。ネットブックは価格が安いことが最も重要とされており、パフォーマンスは重視されていない。したがって、メールやWebの利用はそれなりだが、ビジネス／クリエイティブ系の大規模アプリケーションには全く適さない。手軽に持ち運べるサブマシンを、安価に購入できることがメリットとなる。
CPUはインテルのAtom N270／1.6GHzを搭載。チップセットはMobile Intel 945GSE Expressで、グラフィック機能（Intel GM A950）も内蔵されている。液晶画面は8.9インチワイド／1,024×600ピクセルで、LEDバックライトを備えた光沢タイプのパネルを用いている。バッテリを含めた重さは1kgほど。画面サイズ／解像度、重量とも、ネットブックとして標準的な内容だ。
本体背面（上）、バッテリのみでファンレスのため放熱口などはない。本体前面（下）、電源とバッテリのインジケータがあるほかはすっきりしている。
メインメモリは最大1GB、グラフィックメモリはメインメモリと共用で最大64MBまでとなる。ストレージはSSD のみで、容量は4GB／8GB／16GBの3種類。OSはLinuxベースのUbuntu 8.04（カスタマイズ版）とWindows XP Home Edition SP3が選択でき、後者の場合はSSDの容量が8GBか16GBになる。
外部インターフェイスは基本的なものが揃っており、カードリーダも装備。ネットワークは有線LAN／無線LANを備える。直販サイトでは、WebカメラとBluetoothの追加も選択可能だ。
本体左側面（上）、USB・AC電源・マルチカードリーダが備わる。本体右側面（下）、USBと外部モニタ出力・音声入出力・有線LANの各端子がある。
カラーバリエーションはブラックとホワイトの2色で、天板やパームレストは光沢仕上げ。全体のデザインはすっきりしており、作りや質感はまずまずだろう。
